Our System Development Lead, Steve Prusha, discusses how introducing leading indicators (such as effective surrogates of collision hazard into the testing of autonomous vehicles) can provide convincing evidence to support industry safety claims.
Despite collectively travelling millions of miles with relatively few incidents, large AV fleets have yet to fully satisfy the need to validate system safety from the perspective of regulatory bodies, insurers, and the public. Current methods (road testing and simulations combined with a Safety Case) are necessary, but more is needed to demonstrate the safety of their operations.
In an internal paper available now to download from our Publications page, our System Development Lead, Steve Prusha, discusses how introducing leading indicators (such as effective surrogates of collision hazard into the testing of AVs) can provide convincing evidence to support industry safety claims. Moreover, eliminating the need to wait for collisions can considerably speed up the development (and deployment) of autonomous fleets, benefiting the industry and, just as significantly, the public at large.
